It is a great pleasure and honor to welcome you all to the 14th International Karl Polanyi Conference.

Ten years have passed since the global financial crisis began. But the world economy is still not on the path of robust recovery. In 30 years of Neoliberalism, the world is still suffering from extreme inequality. Society is divided and nature is getting into desperately dangerous crisis. Immediately after the crisis, governments in the US and Europe, which have gone out of their way to supply liquidity and stimulus packages, are once again stuck in the market logic of austerity policy. Is economics is still in the illusion. of a self-regulated market.

The 14th International Karl Polanyi Conference is to be held for the first time in Asia. It is even more meaningful that candlelight vigils are held in Korea, which impeached the president and created a new government. The candle demonstration of Korea can be referred to one of Polanyi’s double movements. The central theme is “Polanyi and the crisis of contemporary capitalism.” Moreover, we will focus on the “Income-led growth” or slight modification of wage-led growth, which was recently introduced by the Korean government. Also, It is meaningful to discuss whether candle demonstration can be viewed as a double movement, to refine a new idea of basic income, and to study Polanyi‘s research and social economy in Asia.

I hope that this conference will encourage young participants with diverse backgrounds and the topics will become more realistic to our community. Finally, I believe that the conference will contribute to the world once again experiencing “Great Transformation” to become more ecological and equitable society and a complex society in which democracy is fully achieved.
